FRÜHLING (SPRING), 2024
installation in public space
crack through existing granite paving, pioneer & wild plants, 125 meters lenght
Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig & City of Leipzig

Nina Schuiki’s “Spring” creates a crack through the existing granite paving slabs of the interspace that encloses the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig (MdbK). From the crack grows the narrow-leaved willowherb – a pioneer species that breaks through the sealed ground. The activity of digging and growing can be seen in the sculptural gesture, as various layers of time and city history push into and out of the ground. The artwork refers to this complexity and the rhythms and levels that accompany it. Situated between the large-scale architecture of the Museum Square, “Spring” introduces a smaller, more human scale to the space, offering a range of contextual connections and aesthetic experiences. The importance of site-specific and historical references, as well as questions relating to the future of sustainable urban planning, will be addressed through the artwork and complemented by a year-long, multifaceted supporting programme.
